SUMMARY:Coffee With the Authors - Bryan Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Michael Hughes is an author and lifelong vocalist. After having told stories for years on stage\, he found fulfillment in recording written family anecdotes. This led to writing fiction in earnest in 2021. Since then\, he has completed five novels\, a short story collection inspired by his readers\, a coffee table book\, and now his debut children’s book – Chloe the Curious Conch Shell. Bryan’s writing offers delightfully complicated characters and fantastic settings. He highlights themes of self love\, overcoming challenges\, and positive mental health. \nInspired by Bryan’s mother-in-law\, Andrea\, the story for Chloe the Curious Conch Shell was initially a poem written after observing her at the beach. Andrea’s enthusiasm for shell hunting was contagious. Every single one–broken or not–was beautiful to her. Believing this was a story that needed to be shared\, Bryan approached Samantha\, who immediately agreed to illustrate the story. Join us to hear them talk about the book on Thursday\, May 8 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. Coffee\, tea\, and breakfast treats will be served. This is a free event\, but seating is limited. Contact the gallery to hold your spot. 910.575.5999.

SUMMARY:Coffee With the Authors - Denny Hamann
DESCRIPTION:Denny Hamann is set to speak at the gallery’s Coffee With the Authors series on Thursday\, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. – 12 noon. Denny says\, “Southern towns are brimming with stories and storytellers. The sleepy little textile mill town in central North Carolina\, where I grew up\, is no exception. I began writing short stories that chronicled some of my childhood recollections. Stories passed down by family elders led me to research my family history. This research inspired me to write my first novel\, Cryin’s for Hungry Babies. I’m a member of the South Carolina Writers Association\, NMB Writers\, Surfside Writers\, and a finalist in the 2023 Elizabeth Simpson Smith Short Story Contest.” He followed that with Cottonville Road and most recently\, Cottonville Road II. In 1890s North Carolina\, the daughter of a bootlegger defies the odds by parlaying a rundown bootleg joint into a sophisticated moonshine distilling empire with financial tentacles that reach far and wide. She becomes the wealthiest and most powerful woman in the state\, but it comes at a price. Join us to hear Denny speak about the book and his writing experiences. Coffee\, tea and breakfast treats will be served. This is a free event\, but seating is limited\, so the gallery asks that you call to reserve a spot. 910.575.5999.

SUMMARY:Coffee With the Authors - E.L. Boyer
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With the Authors\nThursday\, May 9\, 11 am – 12 noon\nE.L. Boyer (“A Lie More Real than Truth”)\nLiz Boyer worked as a registered nurse for 25 years before turning to literary pursuits. This is a work of fiction\, however\, the author’s curiosity about missing people spurred her to examine the possibility that a person could disappear and make a new life for herself. \nAuthor Statement:“I attended Georgia State College as an English major. But medicine was my calling and I am very happy I had all of those years as a nurse. For five years I worked for a medical management company and was director of operations  for three years. Then my husband retired and we moved to the coastal Carolina area. I enjoy playing golf\, Mah Jongg\, but most of all reading. I served as secretary for the local art council for 7 years and really enjoyed getting to know more about the art community. There are many artists and writers in the area I live in and they are extremely talented. The coastal area brings out one’s creativity. In 2020\, I developed a syndrome known as Burning Mouth. It is exactly what it is named\, the mouth burns constantly. I am in a couple of Facebook groups about it and the stories are sad but informative. I pray for all of those that are suffering with this syndrome. The hope is there will be a cure one day but there are so few people with it that it does not get the funding other more serious diseases receive and deserve. Writing helps divert my attention from this malady and I find comfort in creating characters and scenarios.” \nCoffee with the Authors is a free event at Sunset River Gallery in Calabash\, NC\, but seating is limited. Please RSVP to 910.575.5999. Coffee\, tea\, and breakfast treats will be served.
