DESCRIPTION:Denny Hamann is set to speak at the gallery’s Coffee With the Authors series on Thursday\, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. – 12 noon. Denny says\, “Southern towns are brimming with stories and storytellers. The sleepy little textile mill town in central North Carolina\, where I grew up\, is no exception. I began writing short stories that chronicled some of my childhood recollections. Stories passed down by family elders led me to research my family history. This research inspired me to write my first novel\, Cryin’s for Hungry Babies. I’m a member of the South Carolina Writers Association\, NMB Writers\, Surfside Writers\, and a finalist in the 2023 Elizabeth Simpson Smith Short Story Contest.” He followed that with Cottonville Road and most recently\, Cottonville Road II. In 1890s North Carolina\, the daughter of a bootlegger defies the odds by parlaying a rundown bootleg joint into a sophisticated moonshine distilling empire with financial tentacles that reach far and wide. She becomes the wealthiest and most powerful woman in the state\, but it comes at a price. Join us to hear Denny speak about the book and his writing experiences. DESCRIPTION:New works by Raleigh\, NC artist Chantal Tomiello will be featured at the gallery in a one-woman show titled The Shape of Light. The show includes 19 of her original acrylic pieces showcasing her popular abstracted landscapes\, female figures\, and several ballet motif paintings.The show runs from Friday\, Sept. 6 through Saturday\, Oct. 12. An opening reception to meet and speak with the artist is set for Friday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. The French-Canadian born Tomiello says\, “Deconstruction of a realistic subject into abstraction is something that inspires me. I want to break down what I see into simple shapes tin order to reveal that one thing which brings wonder and excitement to my subject. I currently work with a limited palette of acrylics on multiple paintings at one time. This allows time and distance to find the magic\, to play freely between canvases without being too focused on any one result. It’s also been interesting to me how line can impact a painting. It invokes a feeling of ‘unfinished’ and ‘raw\,’ thus allowing the viewer to be a part of the paintings history.” We hope you’ll join us at the reception. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Due to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Debby\, this date was changed from Aug. 8 to Aug. 15.Henry Hack served 22 years with the Nassau County\, NY Police Department\, rising to the rank of inspector. He commanded the Scientific Investigation Bureau and was qualified as an expert witness in several forensic evidence areas. In “The Pipes Are Calling\,”  the latest in the author’s Danny Borland series\, a retired detective’s home is burglarized and the two assailants\, one black and one white\,  are killed. The detective is labeled a racist cop and subsequently convicted of murder. A bizarre series of events follows including a race against time. Henry Hack will tell us all about it during his presentation. This is one you won’t want to miss. As always\, this is a free event\, but seating is limited\, please let us know if you plan to attend. DESCRIPTION:Raleigh\, NC-based artist Eric McRay’s  much awaited collage show\, which is  titled  Southern Comfort\, opens Friday\, July 26\, 2024 with a public reception from 5 – 7 p.m. Please join us to meet Eric and hear his firsthand inspirations for this insightful exhibition of original collages. According to the artist he uses collage to expose visual storytelling while addressing the human figure as an entity of change in theatrical narratives. These chronicles are inspired by African-American\, Biblical references\, art history\, and pop culture . . . yet\, at the core\, are McRay’s familial relationships. This continuum searches for personal and universal experiences. \nMcRay says\, “Collage\, one of the major innovations of modern art\, is an artist inserting pieces of the real world into a constructed one.” He injects impromptu invention in the constructions of his collages\, which include such materials as reproductions of his previous works\, painted papers\, photographic reproductions\, snippets of photography\, scraps of fabric\, elements from magazines\, and more. The different materials of everyday existence are edited\, sliced\, and reassembled into new images on paper\, board\, or canvas. These constructed worlds pull the viewer into a new reality. Collage empowers McRay to push the boundaries that allow the real world to infiltrate a painting\, dissolve the conventions that separate art and life\, high art and popular culture. \nMcRay’s artistic career has been featured on TV and radio programs\, and in numerous newspapers\, magazines and websites. The Raleigh News & Observer named him one of the “Artists to Watch”. Numerous times he has been listed among the “Best Local Artist” and “Favorite Local Artist”. SUMMARY:Spotlight Rich Flanegan
DESCRIPTION:Oil painter Rich Flanegan is the Spotlight Artist at the gallery from July 15 – Sept. 15. Best known for his detailed beachscapes and coastal oil paintings\, Rich says\, “I try to capture the mood of the scene and moment in time that made an impression on me. Somethings it’s the force of the surge\, the cloud formation\, the wind\, the light playing on the water or the sand. I focus on the light on and shadow\, the color and values\, and the small details of the scene that impressed me.” Rich has earned many awards including the 2017\, 2019\, and 2023 Lee Barrett People’s Choice and First Place awards (2019 and 2020) at the Arts Council of Moore County Fine Arts Festival. Rich and his wife\, stained glass artist Diane Flanegan\, live in Moore County\, NC. SUMMARY:Spotlight Artist: Bob Moffett June 15 - July 15
DESCRIPTION:Works by professional wood turner Bob Moffet will be featured at Sunset River Gallery from June 15 – July 15. On display will be a range of items including lidded boxes\, platters\, bowls\, and larger art pieces. Bob is a past president of the Piedmont Woodturners Association and treasurer of the Chapel Hill Woodturners. His interest in woodturning grew after taking a series of courses at his local community college and at John C. Campbell Folk School. He has also studied with a number of turners including Bill and Jim Wallace\, Alan Batty\, Frank Penta\, Mike Stafford\, Aveleno Samuels\, among others. \nFor the past several years Bob has specialized in turning offset platters\, miniature bird house ornaments\, sea urchin ornaments\, bowls and boxes\, incorporating surface treatments such as texturing\, spiraling\, chatter\, beading\, and woodburning. We’re proud to feature Bob as our Spotlight Artist and hope you’ll be by to see his very special display.
