DESCRIPTION:Denny Hamann is set to speak at the gallery’s Coffee With the Authors series on Thursday\, Sept. 12 from 11 a.m. – 12 noon. Denny says\, “Southern towns are brimming with stories and storytellers. The sleepy little textile mill town in central North Carolina\, where I grew up\, is no exception. I began writing short stories that chronicled some of my childhood recollections. Stories passed down by family elders led me to research my family history. This research inspired me to write my first novel\, Cryin’s for Hungry Babies. I’m a member of the South Carolina Writers Association\, NMB Writers\, Surfside Writers\, and a finalist in the 2023 Elizabeth Simpson Smith Short Story Contest.” He followed that with Cottonville Road and most recently\, Cottonville Road II. In 1890s North Carolina\, the daughter of a bootlegger defies the odds by parlaying a rundown bootleg joint into a sophisticated moonshine distilling empire with financial tentacles that reach far and wide. She becomes the wealthiest and most powerful woman in the state\, but it comes at a price. Join us to hear Denny speak about the book and his writing experiences. She  has a keen appreciation for the magic of light and texture and the compositional dance of positive and negative spaces in nature.  Her acrylic and oil paintings are the product of much exposure to the fine arts and a great deal of ‘moving about’ in a busy and certainly happy life.  Her works express the artist’s sense of harmony and balance. Mary’s award-winning paintings showcase the variety of coastal and inland scenes characteristic of the Carolina lowcountry region. Private collectors and designers are discovering the majesty of Austin’s land and waterscapes; her large works take centerstage in homes throughout the region. SUMMARY:Otis Lee: A Dive Into the Culture of Quilombos
DESCRIPTION:Otis L. Lee\, Jr. is a remarkable individual who defied the challenges of segregation and Jim Crow laws during his upbringing. Originally an attorney\, Otis has now embarked on a successful career as an author. In November 2024 he spoke at the gallery’s Coffee With the Authors event about his book\,  “I Was Born in the Forest\,  A Traveler’s Guide to Quilombos the Citadels of African Resistance to Slavery in Portuguese America and a Story of Black Spartacus.”  On January 16\, he returns to present “A Dive Into the Culture of Quilombos\,” about his recent post publication research field trip to Brazil. \nThis is a free event\, but seating is limited\, so attendees are requested to reserve a seat by calling the gallery at 910.575.5999.

We’ll be creating our own abstracted or conceptual portraits. We’ll study how to actually use the techniques we learn and how to infuse our works with soul. You’ll learn to translate your thought into marks the viewer can understand. Marybeth will cover topics such as symbolism\, pattern\, analog drawing\, expressing emotion and more. SUMMARY:Artist Spotlight Debanjana Bhattacharjee
DESCRIPTION:The gallery is excited to feature Myrtle Beach artist Debanjana Bhattacharjee  as the Spotlight Artist from Feb. 1 through March 29. Born in Mumbai\, India\, Debanjana moved to Myrtle Beach\, SC in 2015 from Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Mumbai and a post graduate diploma in computer applications. She also has a post graduate diploma in Modern and Contemporary Indian Art History from Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai. Her artistic practices are a blend of her Indian and western aesthetic sensibilities. \nIn 2015 Debanjana was recognized with a proclamation from the Mayor of Edinburg\, Texas for her artistic (painting and sculpting) achievements. A self-taught artist\, she works in acrylic\, oil and gouache. In 2020 Debanjana was the curator for Twitter Art Exhibit (now called Postcard Art Exhibit) in Myrtle Beach. She has earned numerous awards and honors\, including 2024 Artfields\, Lake City\, SC; juried 2023 Piccolo Spoleto; 2022 Seacoast Artist Guild Fall Show\, third place; and more. She says\, “I am a plein air artist trying to capture those fleeting beautiful moments outdoors. My paintings are my instant reaction to the scene.” \nYou won’t want to miss this display by a very special artist.

DESCRIPTION:“When you come to a fork in the road\, take it.” \n– Yogi Berra \nPlan to  join us February 15\, when Gary and Sue Baird regale us with tales of their 13\,075 mile road trip this past summer.  Gary is a nature photographer\, so he planned the trip to go through 17 national parks in the US and Canada\, as well as wildlife refuges and state parks.  Throughout the presentation he will be sharing images of animals from polar bears in Hudson Bay\, Manitoba to sea lions surfing off the coast of La Jolla\, California\, as well as landscapes from Kakabeka Falls in Ontario to the Yosemite Valley in California. Travel vicariously with the Bairds from the comfort of the gallery and we won’t even make you chip in for gas. This is a free event\, but seating is limited \, so reservations are required.
