DESCRIPTION:Show extended through Saturday\, Aug. 26th \nAcausal Coincidences\, works by potter Mark Golitz and abstract acrylic painter Lynn Golitz\, is the featured show at Sunset River Gallery in Calabash\, NC from July 10 – August 19. A reception to meet the artists is scheduled for Friday\, July 14 from 5 – 7 p.m. The public is invited and there is no charge. \nHusband and wife\, Lynn and Mark Golitz share a studio in Morehead City\, NC\, but work in two separate genres. \nLynn is a self-taught abstract acrylics artist who is a continual student of compositional theory\, art history\, color\, and design. She says\, “In passages that merge and flow like action in language\, my brushwork conveys my sense of seeing concepts in abstracted form. Always aware of the ‘if you see everything\, you see nothing’ conceptual approach\, I use my canvas to present social conscripts meant to inspire as well as invite thought and conversation.” \nMark describes himself as a functional and contemporary pottery maker. The colors and designs of his work translate from a lifetime of outdoor experiences including a career as a forester and a love of inshore and deep-water fishing. A longtime potter and instructor\, he says\, “Exploring new forms\, colors and firing techniques keep the creativity flowing. In addition to functional designs\, I enjoy creating decorative saggar and raku fired vases that infuse the color and luster of interference mica.” \nBoth artists are sought after. DESCRIPTION:When Larry Johnson purchased the gallery last summer\, he brought with him a collection of investment-grade 20th century century art that is now on display and for sale right here in Calabash. The works range from Wolf Kahn (1927 – 2020) known for his unique blend of realism combined with the formal discipline of color field painting to Hunt Slonem (1951) and his neo-expressionist oil paintings of birds\, in which he uses repetition as a form of meditation. On June 20 at 1 p.m.\, Larry will take viewers on a walk-though of the works and share with us his knowledge of auctions and the art market. SUMMARY:3 Day Watercolor Batik Workshop with Instructor Ryan Fox
DESCRIPTION:May 6th-8th\, 2023 | 10am-4pm\nLearn a new painting technique using the batik method with watercolor. Watercolor batik is the process of using traditional watercolor paint and wax to create unique and beautiful batik-style paintings on Japanese rice paper. This process is similar to the age old technique where melted wax is applied to fabric as a resist and then the fabric is dipped in dye. Students will begin the process with a drawing and then learn to create highlights and shadows\, as well as how to mask areas of the project with wax. This class is suitable for both beginner and experienced painters with little or no watercolor experience.  Artists will create several 12×16” batik paintings in the workshop. Irons\, rice paper\, electric skillets\, newspapers\, wax\, and brushes for applying wax will be provided.  Artists will need to bring watercolor paints\, brushes\, and suitable clothing (wax does drip and sometimes ends up on clothing). Artists can use reference photographs provided for their drawings or are welcome to bring a high contrast photograph or line drawing to transfer to rice paper. \nRyan is a member of the American Watercolor Society and teaches workshops and classes all around NC. This is his first workshop with us. You will be learning and creating your own unique watercolor batiks. This workshop is limited to nine participants. For information\, call the gallery at 910.575.5999. \nWATERCOLOR BATIK SUPPLY LIST (you bring) \nNormal Watercolor Supplies:\nRecommended Colors- I create 90% of my paintings with Yellow Ochre\, Dioxazine Purple (or Imperial Purple (DS)\, Sap Green\, Burnt Sienna\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cobalt Blue\, Aureolin\, Winsor Yellow\, Cerulean Blue (Winsor Newton)\, Rose Madder\, and Perinone Orange. Any colors will work on batik though \nWatercolor Brushes- Big and small brushes to cover large areas and details. I highly recommend a squirrel mop brush (#8 or #6) to cover rice paper \nWatercolor Palette- I prefer the Sterling Edwards Big Brush palette but I also own several Richeson Covered Palettes. Make sure your palette is big enough to mix up lots of paint with water so you have big puddles of color. \nPaper towels- I use Viva paper towels that have no texture. \nWater container- Anything that holds water. I use two water containers at once- I’ll explain later. \nSpray bottle- Small SOHO or Holbein spray bottle. I also use use a $4 larger spray bottle from Hobby Lobby. I use both for different reasons. \nBoard to put painting on- This could be wood\, plexiglass\, or gatorboard. Needs to be waterproof. The board needs to be several inches larger than your paper. \nDrawing Supplies/Erasers- I will provide brushes to apply wax (do not stick your good watercolor brushes into hot wax) as well as Japanese rice paper. \n$300 | nonrefundable \nThis workshop can be purchased here or by calling the gallery. \nThese are examples of Ryan Fox’s work.
