Santa Portrait Supplies
Paper
Arches is my preferred brand but you can work with what you have. I will be using a 140lb Cold press paper size approximately 9×12 – 10×13. I like to use a 12X16 mat and frame on my Santas. No special reason but I try to keep to a pretty standard size.
Paints
Cadmium Red Light (Holbein) This is my primary face color.
Alizarin Crimson
Mineral Violet (Holbein)
Raw Sienna
Burnt Sienna
Cadmium yellow or Winsor Yellow Deep
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue
Hookers Green
Colors without labels are all Winsor Newton brand.
Being all your colors such as Permanent Rose,Scarlet Lake, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange and Yellow Ochre, flesh color can be mixed and is an option if you don’t want to buy the Holbein color.
Brushes
My favorite brush for portrait painting is the Silver Black Velvet Round 3000S #10 & #12. I don’t use a liner brush very often, the Silver round has a very nice point even in the large size and that’s what I use most of the time. I almost always use one brush to put on paint and one brush to blend out with. My blending brush is a little stiffer and holds much less water. Please bring what you have and are comfortable with.
Misc.
A gator board, or backing board to tape your paper on for support
Easel, something to support board more upright when you paint
Masking tape, HB pencil, eraser
Water basin, paper towels
Sarai or any wax free graphite paper
iPad or tablet for your reference. So easy to zoom in on features and color is more accurate than a print out. I couldn’t paint without it.
Notebook and pen for notes. I always take lots of notes and refer back to them regularly. This is an intense workshop on faces and I think it will be helpful for you to go back to your notes. I use mine all the time.
I have also provided a line drawing for your Santa. A copy will be provided to you upon payment for the class. If you have questions about transfer instructions, please call or text me.
