Workshop: Concepts of Abstract
Instructor Samantha Spalti
Saturday, Feb. 24 – Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Class limited to 8 students. $95, non-refundable
More than just slapping paint on a canvas, abstract (non-representational) art is about ideas and feelings. In this two-day workshop, we will explore how to express those ideas and feelings without representation. We will be dealing with the “why” of painting, not the “what.” The “how” is then determined by that “why.”
Day One
Exploration through dialogue, walking the gallery and discussion, how some of our artists convey ideas. Bring an image of an abstract work that speaks to you.
Day Two
Exploration will include putting paint to canvas. Do not expect to walk away with a finished piece (but you’ll have ideas worth pursuing). Includes one-on-one attention for each participant.
Materials
Plan on bringing your own canvases and materials – what you’re comfortable working with – acrylic paints, brushes/palette knives, etc. This isn’t the workshop to play with new materials. Also bring snacks/lunch.

Intro to Abstract /Instructor Samantha Spalti
If you’ve ever wanted to try painting an abstract, but were hesitant (or afraid, even) this is the class for you. In three hours, you’ll complete your own abstract work of art. We’ll approach it simply and easily, exploring the basics of design – lines, shapes, and color. We’ll cover form, value, space, and texture. You’ll have fun, but you’ll learn something, too.
This workshop is simple enough for novices but serves as a great refresher for someone with more experience. Samantha will take you through it step by step, helping you choose colors, create movement, and balance your elements.
Gallery provides all paint and materials and includes a hand-out on the Principles of Art & Design. $40 non-refundable. Call 910.575.5999 to sign up or register online.
