Gallery adds to roster of artists

Gallery director Samantha Spalti welcomes Abby Warman.

Earlier this year, Sunset River Gallery put out a call for professional 2D and 3D artists who reside or have a studio in North or South Carolina. Gallery director Samantha Spalti said, “We are looking for the best of the best – accomplished artists with passion, talent, and a body of work to present.”

Artists from all over the two states, working in a range of media, responded to the call and Spalti has been viewing artwork and meeting with artists ever since.

Spalti said that there were 13 new artists added to the gallery roster with several more to follow over the next month. The initial group of newly accepted artists includes Abby Warman (oil), Clay Johnson (oil), Rachel Jones (oil and watercolor), Kimberley Yoh (bronze), Sandy Nelson (oil), Jonathan Douglas (oil), Donna Mertz (fiber), Ron Parent (oil), Debanjana Bhattacharjee (oil), Gail Black (oil), Louise Giordano (fiber), Janet Boschker (oil and cold wax), and Joyce Fiedler (seaglass).

Not yet showing at Sunset River Gallery but scheduled later this month are Marybeth Bradbury (mixed media), Kurt Klimak (stained glass), Steve Middleton (oil), Kari Feuer (oil), Quinn Sweeney (oil), and Cathryn Collopy O’Donnell (acrylic).

“Our regular collectors are going to love these new artists. The talent is off the charts, and they are already a wonderful addition to the gallery. We’re very excited to have them join Sunset River Gallery,” Spalti added.

How to respond

Email your information to us at info@sunsetrivergallery.com – with ARTIST SUBMISSION in the subject line. Please be sure to include your name (of course!), where you live, phone number, best email address to reach you, biography, awards list when applicable, and artist statement. Also include four to five good quality images with titles, media, dimensions, date completed, and retail prices. 3D artists, please include more than one angle of each item.

The gallery team will review every entry, and if we feel you are a good fit for the gallery, we will reach out with next steps. Please note, not every artist can be accepted. This is not a commentary on the work quality, but rather if the work complements our existing artists and clientele. Speaking frankly, we want to sell your art! And having the right fit of artists in the gallery helps make that happen.

Gallery to present talk on 20th century art collection

When Larry Johnson purchased Sunset River Gallery last summer, he brought with him a collection of investment-grade 20th century and contemporary art that is now on display and for sale at the gallery in Calabash, NC. The works range from Wolf Kahn, known for his unique blend of realism combined with the formal discipline of color field painting to Hunt Slonem and his neo-expressionist oil paintings of birds, in which he uses repetition as a form of meditation.

On June 20 at 1 p.m., Johnson will present a gallery talk about the works, sharing the knowledge of why he selected the artists in the collection and how their individual artworks were chosen. The group will also tour works by Angel Botello (1913-1986), Wolf Kahn (1927-2020), Raimonds Staprans (1926), Vladimir Cora (1951), Hunt Slonem (1951), Betty Anglin Smith (1946), and sculptures by Glenna Goodacre (1939-2020) and Edward Francis McCartan (1879-1947), He and gallery director Samantha Spalti will be available to answer questions about the art works on display.

The event is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are requested. Call the gallery at 910.575.5999 during business hours, which are Monday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
