● Do you think you would be a good fit for the gallery? Not all art fits in every gallery, please feel free to visit SRG and determine for yourself if your work would be a good fit before you submit.

○ The gallery team will review every entry, if they feel you are a good fit for the gallery, they will reach out with next steps.

○ Not all artists will be accepted. This is not a commentary on the quality of your work, but rather whether the work compliments our existing artists and what we feel we can sell.

● Timeframe for submission process:

Mary Welch Austin Spotlight Artist Sept. 16 – Nov. 2

Mary Welch Austin named Spotlight Artist at Sunset River Gallery Sept. 16 – Nov. 2

Glow II by Mary Welch Austin, oil, 9×12 (detail)

Mary Welch Austin has been named Spotlight Artist at Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC from Sept. 16 through Nov. 2. Austin is known for her keen sense of harmony and balance in her landscapes and seascapes. Working primarily in oil, she suggests the magic of light and texture along with the compositional dance of positive and negative spaces in nature.

Austin’s award-winning paintings showcase the variety of coastal and inland scenes characteristic of the Carolina low country region. Private collectors and designers are discovering the majesty of Austin’s land and waterscapes; her large works take centerstage in homes throughout the region.

The artist is originally from High Point, NC and attended Salem College, the University of Georgia and earned a BFA degree in Art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After a career as a fabric designer developing significant skills in color, composition and perspective, she now enjoys focusing exclusively on her painting.

Gallery director Samantha Spalti said, “Mary’s work is outstanding. From her vision to her brushstrokes to her treatment of light . . . she’s the sort of artist who artists love.”

Featured painting: Into the Light, oil by Mary Welch Austin, 24×48.

Gallery features Chantal Tomiello: The Shape of Light

Chantal Tomiello works to be featured at Sunset River Gallery Sept. 7 – Oct. 26; opening reception 5 – 7 p.m.

The Promise by Chantal Tomiello, acrylic 24″x24″

New works by Raleigh, NC artist Chantal Tomiello will be featured at Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC in a one-woman show titled The Shape of Light. The exhibit includes 20 of her original acrylic pieces showcasing her popular abstracted landscapes, female figures, and several ballet motif paintings. The show runs from Friday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Oct. 12. An opening reception to meet and speak with the artist is set for Friday evening from 5 – 7 p.m.

The French-Canadian born Tomiello says, “Deconstruction of a realistic subject into abstraction is something that inspires me. I want to break down what I see into simple shapes in order to reveal that one thing which brings wonder and excitement to my subject. I currently work with a limited palette of acrylics on multiple paintings at one time. This allows time and distance to find the magic, to play freely between canvases without being too focused on any one result. It’s also been interesting to me how line can impact a painting. It invokes a feeling of ‘unfinished’ and ‘raw,’ thus allowing the viewer to be a part of the painting’s history.”

Gallery director Samantha Spalti adds, “Chantal knows just what to keep and what can fall away from her subjects, leaving the viewer to experience something that is both familiar and brand new. Her work is contemporary but feels equally at home in a traditional setting. It’s ideal for the eclectic homes and workspaces we find in coastal Carolina.”

Gallery to feature Eric McRay collages July 26-Aug 31

Gallery to feature Eric McRay collages July 26 – August 31

Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC will feature a collection of collages by artist Eric McRay in a show titled Southern Comfort: Collages by Eric McRay from July 26 through August 3. An opening reception will be held Friday, July 26 from 5 – 7 p.m. He will present a gallery talk beginning at 5:45 p.m. There is no charge and reservations are not required.

The Raleigh, NC based artist, who was born and raised in Washington DC, uses collage to explore visual storytelling while addressing the human figure as an entity of change in theatrical narratives. These chronicles are inspired by African American, Biblical, and art history, as well as pop culture, but at the core are McRay’s familial relationships. This continuum searches for personal and universal experiences.

McRay received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, where he earned a four-year scholarship for his artistic talent. He moved in North Carolina and has been exhibiting since 1987. His artistic career has been featured on television and radio programs and in numerous newspapers, magazines and online media outlets. The Raleigh News & Observer named him on of the “Artists to Watch” and he has been listed numerous times among “Best Local Artists.”

McRay says, “Collage, one of the major innovations of modern art, is an artist inserting pieces of the real world into a constructed one.”

He injects impromptu invention in the construction of his collages, which include such materials as reproductions of his previous works, painted papers, photographic snippets, scraps of fabrics, watermedia, acrylic paints and more. The different materials of everyday existence are edited, sliced, and reassembled into new images on paper, board, or canvas.

Rich Flanegan named Spotlight Artist July 15 – August 15

Oil painter Rich Flanegan is the Spotlight Artist at Sunset River Gallery from July 15 – August 15. Best known for his detailed beachscapes and coastal oil paintings, Rich says, “I try to capture the mood of the scene and moment in time that made an impression on me. Somethings it’s the force of the surge, the cloud formation, the wind, the light playing on the water or the sand. I focus on the light on and shadow, the color and values, and the small details of the scene that impressed me.”

Rich has painted all his life and earned his bachelor’s degree in art. He has earned many awards including the 2017, 2019, and 2023 Lee Barrett People’s Choice and First Place awards (2019 and 2020) at the Arts Council of Moore County Fine Arts Festival.
