New Artist Submission Opportunity Feb. 1 – 17, 2024

Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC has a limited number of openings for professional 2D and 3D artists who reside or have a studio in North or South Carolina. We are looking for the best of the best – accomplished artists with passion, talent, and a body of work to present. From our perspective, your work should both stand out and work well with other pieces in the gallery. Ask yourself: is your work a cut above? How do you feel it would fit at Sunset River Gallery? Do you continue to grow as an artist?

What we offer you

We bring you a 10,000 square foot gallery with a 20+ year stellar reputation. Our clients are mainly regional, but come from all around the country and Europe. Since opening in 2002, we have become a repeat destination for art lovers up and down the east coast. Gallery director Samantha Spalti and our staff nurture relationships with our collectors as well as our artists. We market heavily throughout the year with public relations, a monthly newsletter, digital advertising and print ads. Charity events, juried shows, book signings, a holiday art market, and six- to eight-week shows featuring our Sunset River artists bring thousands of visitors to the gallery.

How to respond

Email your information to us at info@sunsetrivergallery.com – with ARTIST SUBMISSION in the subject line. Please be sure to include your name (of course!), where you live, phone number, best email address to reach you, biography, awards list when applicable, and artist statement. Also include four to five good quality images with titles, media, dimensions, date completed, and retail prices. 3D artists, please include more than one angle of each item.

The gallery team will review every entry, and if we feel you are a good fit for the gallery, we will reach out with next steps. Please note, not every artist can be accepted. This is not a commentary on the work quality, but rather if the work complements our existing artists and clientele. Speaking frankly, we want to sell your art! And having the right fit of artists in the gallery helps make that happen.

Gallery announces first show of 2024 – Selfie. Opening reception Saturday, Jan. 6

Selfie • Jan. 6 – Feb. 3, 2024 • Opening Reception Jan. 6, 2 – 4 p.m.

Artist Susan Barnard, Silver Foxes

According to gallery director Samantha Spalti, Sunset River Gallery announces its first show of 2024, Selfie, a juried group show featuring a range of art works inspired by the concept of “selfie.” The opening reception is set for Saturday, Jan. 6 from 2 – 4 p.m. The show runs from Jan. 6 through Feb. 3.

Spalti said, “We thought it would be fun and interesting to explore the psychology of selfies, so we’ve invited regional artists to open up and show us their true selves – at a given moment.

“I think a selfie is ‘in the moment,’ a representation of where the artist is at that moment rather than a formal portrait. I’m finding that people are taking the idea of ‘selfie’ in different directions, and I love that!”

The show features 25+ works in a range of media including photography, mixed media, acrylic, and more. Spalti adds, “Some are straight forward, and others are more contemplative.

A mixed media piece by Susan Barnard began as a traditional selfie. The viewer can see that by the angle of the faces. Titled Silver Foxes, the original photo of the artist and her husband was taken in front of building graffiti in Michigan. Decoupage and silver ink complete the piece which is installed on wood.

Artist Judi Moore, Don’t Let Your Worries

Judi Moore’s acrylic painting is titled Don’t Let Your Worries. She says, “I heard the phrase ‘Don’t let your worries make a nest in your head’ years ago. It has been in the back of my mind ever since. Recently I’ve been painting many birds and nests. This Selfie painting idea occurred when the two ideas collided.”

The diverse nature of the work in the exhibit reflects the humor, talent, and conceptual excitement of the participating artists. The gallery invites the public to visit the during the Selfie show and enjoy the sheer creativity on display.

Frank Campion show opens Sept. 15

Acclaimed NC artist Frank Campion to be featured at Sunset River Gallery; opening reception September 15

Opening Friday, Sept. 15 and running through Saturday, Oct. 21 is Frank Campion – Dichotomies. When gallery director Samantha Spalti saw Frank Campion’s work for the first time, her reaction was nothing less than visceral. “It was that powerful,” she says. “In front of me was this stunning abstract painting that had so much movement, such emotion that it took my breath away.”

NC Artist Frank Campion

The show includes works on both canvas and paper.  About this show, the artist says, “The dictionary defines ‘dichotomy’ as ‘a division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups – a dichotomy between thought and action.’ It occurs to me that we tend to be naturally judgmental, making the world a binary proposition: good/bad, yes/no, on/off, right/wrong, hot/cold, rough/smooth, etc. So, this new work is about dichotomies.

One dichotomy involves the collision between the rational and the random. The rational is the simple geometric, intentional composition. The random is the occurrence of accidental painterly incidents. The other dichotomy has to do with the meeting of dominant colors that exist independently, but live adjacent to each other. This creates an emotional atmosphere or mood. as the work progresses.

Campion, who works out of his studio near Winston-Salem, was featured in Liza Roberts’ 2022 book The Art of the State, celebrating artists who are contributing to the North Carolina’s growing reputation in visual arts. He says, “As abstract as it may initially appear, my work is essentially derived from the tradition of landscape painting. the issues of space and atmosphere seem always to be with me as are the more formal issues about what constitutes an authentic painting – proportion, form, color, composition, and surface.”

After earning his bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Harvard, Campion taught design and drawing before showing his work in group shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Danforth Museum, and the Boston Museum of Fine Art, which has one of his pieces in its permanent collection. He also enjoyed a number of critically successful solo shows during that time. A 30-year career in advertising brought him to North Carolina. When the time came to retire, he was ready to pick up where he left off.

Campion says, “In the fall of 2014, I saw the Matisse cut-outs exhibit at MoMA in NYC. I rediscovered a passion for color. This led me into the graph paper maquette/collages and got me thinking about color and larger scale.”

He built his own dream studio off the back of the house and that is where he is today. Frank Campion calls himself a “re-emerging artist.”

The opening reception is set for Friday, Sept. 15 from 5 – 7 p.m. This is an ideal opportunity for artists, students, and collectors to meet and speak with a forceful voice in North Carolina arts.

Gallery to host Golitz show of acrylics and pottery; reception July 14

Acausal Coincidences, works by potter Mark Golitz and abstract acrylic painter Lynn Golitz, is the featured show at Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC from July 10 – August 19. A reception to meet the artists is scheduled for Friday, July 14 from 5 – 7 p.m. The public is invited and there is no charge.

Husband and wife, Lynn and Mark Golitz share a studio in Morehead City, NC, but work in two separate genres.

Lynn is a self-taught abstract artist who is a continual student of compositional theory, art history, color, and design. She says, “In passages that merge and flow like action in language, my brushwork conveys my sense of seeing concepts in abstracted form. Always aware of the ‘if you see everything, you see nothing’ conceptual approach, I use my canvas to present social conscripts meant to inspire as well as invite thought and conversation.”

Mark describes himself as a functional and contemporary pottery maker. The colors and designs of his work translate from a lifetime of outdoor experiences including a career as a forester and a love of inshore and deep-water fishing. A longtime potter and instructor, he says, “Exploring new forms, colors and firing techniques keep the creativity flowing. In addition to functional designs, I enjoy creating decorative saggar and raku fired vases that infuse the color and luster of interference mica.”

Work by both artists have appeared in Our State, the North Carolina-based publication that celebrates the history, art, and people of the state.
