More than just slapping paint on a canvas, abstract (non-representational) art is about ideas and feelings. In this two-day workshop, we will explore how to express those ideas and feelings without representation. We will be dealing with the “why” of painting, not the “what.” The “how” is then determined by that “why.”
Day One
Exploration through dialogue, walking the gallery and discussion, how some of our artists convey ideas. Bring an image of an abstract work that speaks to you.
Day Two
Exploration will include putting paint to canvas. Do not expect to walk away with a finished piece (but you’ll have ideas worth pursuing). Includes one-on-one attention for each participant.
Materials
Plan on bringing your own canvases and materials – what you’re comfortable working with – acrylic paints, brushes/palette knives, etc. This isn’t the workshop to play with new materials. Also bring snacks/lunch.
Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, NC has a limited number of openings for professional 2D and 3D artists who reside or have a studio in North or South Carolina. We are looking for the best of the best – accomplished artists with passion, talent, and a body of work to present. From our perspective, your work should both stand out and work well with other pieces in the gallery. Ask yourself: is your work a cut above? How do you feel it would fit at Sunset River Gallery? Do you continue to grow as an artist?
What we offer you
We bring you a 10,000 square foot gallery with a 20+ year stellar reputation. Our clients are mainly regional, but come from all around the country and Europe. Gallery director Samantha Spalti and our staff nurture relationships with our collectors as well as our artists. We market heavily throughout the year with public relations, a monthly newsletter, digital advertising and print ads. Charity events, juried shows, book signings, a holiday art market, and six- to eight-week shows featuring our Sunset River artists bring thousands of visitors to the gallery.
How to respond
Email your information to us at info@sunsetrivergallery.com – with ARTIST SUBMISSION in the subject line. Please be sure to include your name (of course!), where you live, phone number, best email address to reach you, biography, awards list when applicable, and artist statement. Also include four to five good quality images with titles, media, dimensions, date completed, and retail prices. 3D artists, please include more than one angle of each item.
The gallery team will review every entry, and if we feel you are a good fit for the gallery, we will reach out with next steps. Please note, not every artist can be accepted. This is not a commentary on the work quality, but rather if the work complements our existing artists and clientele. Speaking frankly, we want to sell your art! And having the right fit of artists in the gallery helps make that happen.
About Sunset River Gallery
Located in coastal Brunswick County, Sunset River Gallery caters to area visitors and locals in search of gifts or fine art for their homes and businesses. Featuring works by more than 100 North and South Carolina artists – and one of the largest collections of investment grade 20th Century art in the Carolinas – the gallery is well known for its range of top-quality paintings, pastels, watermedia, photography, hand-blown and fused glass, clay sculptures, pottery, turned and carved wood, one-of-kind furniture pieces, and bronze sculptures. In 2023, Sunset River Gallery, Inc. acquired premier auctioneer Cordier Auctions. A growing online presence and print advertising continues to expand the gallery’s marketing capabilities. The select group of artists we add during this time will both benefit from and contribute to our success.
According to gallery director Samantha Spalti, Sunset River Gallery announces its first show of 2024, Selfie, a juried group show featuring a range of art works inspired by the concept of “selfie.” The opening reception is set for Saturday, Jan. 6 from 2 – 4 p.m. The show runs from Jan. 6 through Feb. 3.
Spalti said, “We thought it would be fun and interesting to explore the psychology of selfies, so we’ve invited regional artists to open up and show us their true selves – at a given moment.
“I think a selfie is ‘in the moment,’ a representation of where the artist is at that moment rather than a formal portrait. I’m finding that people are taking the idea of ‘selfie’ in different directions, and I love that!”
The show features 25+ works in a range of media including photography, mixed media, acrylic, and more. Spalti adds, “Some are straight forward, and others are more contemplative.
A mixed media piece by Susan Barnard began as a traditional selfie. The viewer can see that by the angle of the faces. Titled Silver Foxes, the original photo of the artist and her husband was taken in front of building graffiti in Michigan. Decoupage and silver ink complete the piece which is installed on wood.
Artist Judi Moore, Don’t Let Your Worries
Judi Moore’s acrylic painting is titled Don’t Let Your Worries. She says, “I heard the phrase ‘Don’t let your worries make a nest in your head’ years ago. It has been in the back of my mind ever since. Recently I’ve been painting many birds and nests. This Selfie painting idea occurred when the two ideas collided.”
The diverse nature of the work in the exhibit reflects the humor, talent, and conceptual excitement of the participating artists. The gallery invites the public to visit the during the Selfie show and enjoy the sheer creativity on display.
